The study of language as a system of humen communication. Although studies of language phenomena have been carried out for centuries, it is only fairly recently that linguistics has been accepted as an independent discipline. Linguistics now covers a wide field with different approaches and different areas of investigation, for example sound systems (PHONETICS, PHONOLOGY), setence structure (SYNTAX), and meaning systems (SEMANTICS, PRAGMATICS, FUNCTION OF LANGUAGE).
In recent years, new branches of linguistics have been developed in combination with other disciplines, e.g, ANTROPOLOGYCAL LINGUISTICS, PSYCHOLINGUISTICS, SOCIOLINGUISTICS and many others.
